The House passed an $819 billion economic stimulus package Wednesday on a party-line vote, despite President Obama's efforts to achieve bipartisan support for the bill.
The final vote was 244 to 188. No Republicans voted for the bill, while just 12 Democrats voted against it.
The Senate is likely to take up the bill next week.
In floor debate, House Democrats offered near-unanimous support for the bill, touting the package's ability to quickly create jobs and jumpstart economic growth.
"One week and one day ago, our new President delivered a great inaugural address ... which I believe is a great blueprint for the future," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "With swift and bold action today, we are doing just that -- with this vote today, we are taking America in a new direction." - CNN
It is amazing that the bill passed pretty much on party lines. However 12 Democrats, the bills own party, voted against it. I want you to remember those words by Speaker Pelosi as time goes by. They will be words to remember as the months go by.
It is also worth noting that CNN has a poll going. At this time 73% say this bill will do nothing to help the job situation, 6% think it will help them get a job, and 23% think it will help them keep their job. That is sad since it is a CNN Poll, "Clinton News Network".
