Cynthia Robinson lost her husband to lung Cancer in 1996. Smoking most likely was the cause for the 36 year old Michael Johnson Sr. got Cancer.
She sued R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and the jury has awarded her $23.6 Billion.
Although I agree that the Tobacco Companies have some liability here with the product that they have sold, but I also think that the users of that product have some responsibility themselves. It wasn't really a secret anymore in the 1990's that Cigarettes were hazardous and caused lung cancer.
I also don't want to blame Michael for this either. Smoking is addictive and very hard to quit.
I believe that maybe there should be a settlement to these families that have lost loved ones. But seriously, $23.6 billion?
It is ridiculously stupid jury awards like this that make the whole system fall apart. That isn't reasonable in any stretch of the imagination.
Make the jury awards somewhat reasonable and I think that you will find a lot more support for these types of lawsuits.
