A Democratic operative working with David Axelrod’s former firm on a campaign in Trinidad and Tobago was denied re-entry last week to the Caribbean nation, setting off a round of finger pointing that highlights the risks of American consultants accepting foreign campaign work.
Henry Bernard Campbell, a Florida-based political consultant who did some work on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, was detained soon after arriving at Trinidad’s international airport in Piarco on Friday and ordered back to the United States on Saturday, according to a source familiar with Campbell’s situation, as well as local news reports.
A report in Saturday’s edition of the tabloid Trinidad & Tobago’s Newsday – which appeared on the front page of the paper with a headline blaring “Obama Advisor Deported” – said that Campbell was turned away under a law that allows the country to ban entry to “an undesirable inhabitant.”
Campbell, who goes by Bernie, had been working as a contractor with AKPD Message & Media, the company founded by White House political guru Axelrod, in the run-up to a May 24 parliamentary election for the opposition United National Congress, the source familiar with the situation told POLITICO. - Politico Story
