County Exec Abele Fires HR Director after 1 Week

On the job for only a week, Milwaukee County's new human resources director was abruptly fired without any reason given, John S. Listinsky said Tuesday.
Listinsky said he got a verbal warning Friday that he might be let go and was fired by email on Monday. He did not get an opportunity to discuss any concerns, Listinsky said.
"Nothing more has been said to me," Listinsky said. "I'm a little bit shocked."
Listinsky's hiring to the $125,000-a-year job was announced late last month by County Executive Chris Abele, in a news release touting Listinsky's credentials with several large private companies.
Abele's office issued a statement Tuesday saying only that the county executive was withdrawing his nomination of Listinsky as HR director. The position requires County Board confirmation.
Abele spokesman Jeff Bentoff said Listinsky's departure was a personnel matter and he couldn't comment further.
Listinsky said he was heavily recruited for the county job and that he quit his last job as human resources director for Thermo Fisher Scientific in Two Rivers to take the county position. - JSONLINE

Obamacare Making Healthcare anything but Affordable

The signature legislation of the Obama Administration, the Affordable Care Act, came under damaging assault Wednesday from a Kaiser Family Foundation survey that found it has already partially contributed to increasing health care costs.

The Kaiser survey helps to shed some light on why so few employers are hiring, as health care costs for employers are spiraling upwards.

The survey found that insurance premiums rose by 9 percent in 2011. Healthcare costs for a single worker went up on average from $5,049 to $5,429, and for a family, costs rose from $13,770 to $15,073, on average.

The survey also found that some provisions of the Affordable Care Act already in place -- including the allowance for young people up to 26 years of age to remain on their parents insurance policy -- contributed to 20 percent of that increase. - FOX News

Costs rise as terra cotta problems at City Hall

More than seven months after a chunk fell off Milwaukee's newly renovated City Hall, the investigation into what went wrong is still ongoing - lasting months longer and costing more than four times as much as originally estimated, city officials say.
The probe has already cost $425,000 and the price is still rising, said Ron Schoeneck, architectural manager for the $76 million renovation that wrapped up in December 2008. Testing and inspections first projected to take several months are now unlikely to be completed before the end of this year, and possibly not until spring, according to Schoeneck and his boss, city Facilities Director Venu Gupta.
Meanwhile, scaffolding continues to ring the iconic building. That will stay in place to protect pedestrians until city officials know what happened and can be sure no other pieces will fall off their 115-year-old headquarters, Schoeneck said.
None of this is what city leaders had in mind when they celebrated the end of the three-year restoration project. It was the biggest public works job in city history, and it came in on schedule and under budget. It later won multiple awards, including one from the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
The scaffolding had been down for more than two years when, on the evening of Feb. 17, a piece of masonry fell off the east side of the building. As it struck the ground, the terra cotta broke into three roughly 5-pound fragments, slightly damaging a car parked on N. Market St. - JSOnline

WASHINGTON - In secretly recorded conversations between two individuals deeply entwined in the ATF's controversial "Fast and Furious" operation, the murder of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry is described as "collateral damage."
The recordings were obtained exclusively by CBS News. The man who made them - Arizona gun dealer Andre Howard - ran the Lone Wolf Trading Company and was speaking with Hope MacAllister, the ATF operation's case agent.
Two of the guns Howard sold while cooperating with the ATF that were later found at Terry's murder.

State Sen. Lena Taylor Taking Heat

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt on Thursday criticized Democratic state Sen. Lena Taylor of Milwaukee for a Facebook posting in which she called for a boycott of paper products made by Georgia-Pacific, which is owned by the politically conservative Koch Brothers.

Georgia-Pacific also is one of Green Bay's largest employers with 2,300 workers.
"A boycott of one of our largest employers would be very hurtful," Schmitt said. He added that in the last five years Georgia-Pacific had invested more than $110 million in expansion and new machinery locally.
"We're very disappointed in her comments," said Schmitt, adding that he does not know Taylor.
"Georgia-Pacific is one of those great companies that we're proud to have in our community," he said. "She's not explained herself, but no one here is taking these comments as anything more than political rhetoric. But it's something we don't need."

Taylor said Thursday that she's urging the boycott because the political policies and leaders that Charles and David Koch support "harm the community."

Taylor was one of 14 Democratic state senators who left the state in February for three weeks to impede Republican Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill, which eliminated most collective bargaining for most public employees. The Koch brothers are supporters of Walker.

Taylor posted the following on her Facebook website:

"Money talks! Why shouldn't you buy the following: Dixie Cups, Vanity Fair Paper Products, Mardi Gras Napkins, Brawny and Sparkle Paper Towels, Angel Soft and Quilted Northern Toilet Paper. . . . Your purchase supports destruction of democracy, two words . . . Koch Brothers. Join the boycott, send this to all of your Facebook Friends."

Police Union Votes Down Contract

In their first deals under a new state bargaining law, Milwaukee firefighters and police commanders have agreed to pay significantly more for their health care in exchange for pay raises.
But the police officers union has rejected a similar deal - even though the city offered to fill 100 police vacancies, a top priority of the Milwaukee Police Association.
Contracts expired at the end of 2009 for all three unions, and they have been working under extensions of their previous agreements. Unlike other public employees, police and firefighters were exempt from the state law that ended most public-sector collective bargaining and required state and local government workers to pay 12% of their health care premium costs and half their pension costs.
City negotiators, however, pushed to extend the same health care contributions to the public safety unions. The pension issue, by contrast, has been in legal limbo since City Attorney Grant Langley issued an opinion saying the state law did not apply to the city pension fund.
The Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Association voted Wednesday to ratify a three-year contract that would retroactively freeze pay for 2010, incorporate premium pay into base salaries for 2011 and raise wages 4% next year for some 800 firefighters up through the rank of captain, said City Labor Negotiator Troy Hamblin and Ald. Michael Murphy, chairman of the Common Council's Finance & Personnel Committee.
Late last month, the Milwaukee Police Supervisors' Organization ratified a deal with similar 2010 and 2011 wage provisions, followed in 2012 by raises of 4.75% for sergeants and 3% for lieutenants, captains and deputy inspectors, according to documents sent to Murphy's committee. Sergeants are the overwhelming majority of the union's roughly 325 members, Hamblin said.
But the larger police union, representing about 1,800 rank-and-file officers and detectives, voted 52% to 48% this week against a contract that would have raised 2012 pay by 4.3%, with the same 2010-'11 pay provisions as the other two safety unions, city officials said. - JS Online

Even though President Obama recently acknowledged the need to minimize regulations, the number appears to be growing. Obama administration regulations on new business rose to 3,573 final rules in 2010, up from 3,503 in 2009 -- the equivalent of about 10 per week. - FOX News

Is there a need for regulation? Most likely yes, there are a need for certain types of regulation. The problem is that the Government has decided that it is their responsibility to control every aspect of business. It is that type of mentality that kills jobs and prevents growth. Free market generally regulates many businesses on its own.

Obama Double Dipping to Pay for New Stimulus

Members of the bipartisan deficit "super committee" are on edge as President Obama calls for Congress to pass his $447 billion jobs plan, fretting that the stimulus-style proposal makes their task that much harder.

The president, who is sending his plan to Congress Monday evening, claims the bill will not add to the deficit. The White House says that over the next two weeks, Obama will spell out exactly how he intends to pay for the proposals, and then some.

But the task of offsetting the cost of the bill will ultimately fall to the bipartisan committee. That committee already is charged with finding about $1.5 trillion in deficit savings by Thanksgiving -- Obama's bill brings their target to about $2 trillion. Though the president plans to give the committee a roadmap to reaching that larger target, Republican members expressed concern that the latest request will make it much harder to drum up enough avenues for deficit reduction in a mere two-month timeframe.

"This proposal would make the already-arduous challenge of finding bipartisan agreement on deficit reduction nearly impossible, removing our options for deficit reduction for a plan that won't reduce the deficit by one penny," committee co-chairman Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, said in a statement.

Obama, outlining how he plans to find additional savings, pointed to exactly the same targets the super committee was already looking at. The president mentioned three possible sources of money-- eliminating or reducing some tax deductions, making changes in entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid and making wealthier households pay "their fair share," a reference to tax increases. - FOX News

Walker Savings Bringing Back Teachers

Teacher retirements may have doubled statewide in this year of Wisconsin budget wars, but some school districts are lessening the drain on classroom experience by bringing back teachers who left the classroom at the beginning of the summer.
Peter Hirt, superintendent of the North Lake School District, said his district has hired two teachers who announced their retirement in March.
Though the two are being paid at about the rate they would have been paid had they stayed on, Hirt said, the district is still saving money on their compensation - and would be even if the alternative was to hire replacements right out of college - because the district doesn't have to pay for their health insurance or contribute any more to their retirement fund.
At least three other Milwaukee-area districts - New Berlin, Wauwatosa and Greenfield - hired back retired staff this year at even greater saving, because the teachers are now being paid at lower rates than they were before.
The Associated Press reported last week that about twice as many public school teachers decided to retire in the first half of this year as in each of the past two full years.
Many of their departures apparently came in anticipation of Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill, which restricted collective bargaining by most public employees, including teachers, and required them to make new pension and health insurance contributions. The new law, which led to weeks of protests at the Capitol, took effect in late June.
The hired-back teachers in North Lake are second-grade teacher Karen Niehausen and Spanish teacher Camille Faherty. Hirt said the two came to him in March and volunteered to retire to protect younger teachers from being laid off.
Hirt says at that time, before Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair bill became law, it looked as if the one-school elementary district would have to lose four of its 37 teachers to balance its budget. He said the district accepted the two retirements and announced the layoffs of two more junior teachers in March.
But after school officials crunched the budget numbers this summer and saw how much they'd save from the provisions in the Walker legislation, they realized they could afford to again fill the four positions that had been trimmed. They called back the two laid-off teachers and then chose the two retired teachers from lists of multiple applicants for the other two jobs. - JSOnline

Cranking up the anti-Tea Party rhetoric, Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa called on workers to "take these son-of-a-bitches out" as he warmed up a crowd Monday in Detroit ahead of President Obama's Labor Day speech.

The rhetoric coming from speakers at the event was already heated before Hoffa took the stage. Hoffa then declared there's a "war on workers" and vowed that organized labor would "remember in November" which lawmakers were opposing the president's agenda.

"We've got to keep an eye on the battle that we face -- a war on workers. And you see it everywhere. It is the Tea Party," he said. "And there's only one way to beat and win that war -- the one thing about working people is, we like a good fight."

Hoffa called on workers to get involved in opposing Tea Party-aligned lawmakers next November.

"President Obama, this is your army, we are ready to march," Hoffa said. "But everybody here's got to vote. If we go back, and keep the eye on the prize, let's take these son-of-a-bitches out." - FOX News

While Obama and the left attacked Palin for targeting lawmakers for removal from office that had nothing to do with the shooting in Arizona, they now apparently condone Hoffa's comments.

The double standard shows a complete lack of leadership from the President and the Democratic party.

Employers added no net workers last month and the unemployment rate was unchanged, a sign that many were nervous the U.S. economy could be at risk of slipping into another recession.

The Labor Department said Friday that total payrolls were unchanged in August, the weakest report in almost a year. It's the first time since February 1945 that the government has reported a net job change of zero. The unemployment rate stayed at 9.1 percent. - FOX News

Union Intimidation out of Control

The unions are so angry and have become so obsessed with Scott Walker, that a contingency of union thugs followed him to Milwaukee’s Messmer Preparatory Catholic School last Friday where the governor was to read to students and tour the school.

An unidentified union thug tried to prevent the visit from occurring by tampering with the school’s door locks. Media reports indicate that the vandal put super glue and sticks in the locks of eight school doors late Thursday night. Things went downhill from there.

Protestors spent the day on the sidewalk outside the school, chanting and displaying anti- Walker signs, such as “War on Walker, not on workers.” One protestor was even arrested on battery charges.

The protests got so raucous that at least one parent said that she felt unsafe entering the school with her child. - Townhall.com

Why do people who support the union stand up and object to this type of behavior? This behavior should not only be unacceptable, but it doesn't do anything to help their cause.

Union Challenged at New Berlin School Board Meeting

In a meeting where teachers alternatively were cheered and booed, and Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining law was shunned and embraced, the school board meeting Monday night encapsulated the drama that continues to surround the role of teachers unions in the state.

At issue was New Berlin's employee handbook, which the board approved in a unanimous vote, but not before teachers spoke about their lack of input in the new document and how the new rules could negatively affect their work and the district's reputation.

The meeting was moved to the Performing Arts Center at New Berlin West Middle/High School, 18695 W. Cleveland Ave., to accommodate crowds that were expected to be much larger than normal. That's in part because of a raucous school board meeting in Greenfield last week where teachers butted heads with the administration and school board members over a new handbook and the issue of collaboration with teachers. Police were called to the scene.

Districts around the state that no longer have collective bargaining agreements with educators have spent this month putting finishing touches on similar handbooks that spell out wages, work rules and benefits. Many have been approved without much fanfare.

Not in New Berlin. On Monday, the auditorium was filled close to its capacity. Some attendees had to hike through athletic fields from overflow parking to get to the meeting. Squad cars were parked outside with lights flashing.

Teachers and union supporters - from New Berlin and other cities - clapped and cheered for their peers. The other half of the audience appeared keen on keeping taxes low and supporting Walker. They cheered when the board approved the handbook.

New Berlin Education Association President Diane Lazewski estimated 200 New Berlin teachers came out to express displeasure with elements of the handbook. She said some of those elements include a longer work day with no extra pay, a reduction in the amount of sick days teachers can accrue, and new rules regarding everything from dress codes to time for teachers to collaborate.

Lazewski said she believes the changes New Berlin put in place are further-reaching than changes in other handbooks approved by Wisconsin districts.

"I would be surprised to see any other handbook as punitive as ours," Lazewski said.

Leslie Potter, a teacher at New Berlin West who left a mechanical engineering career to become a teacher in 1997, told the board the new rules in the handbook required her to work more hours but limited the time she could spend working with students.

She also said it eliminated any reference to prep time for teachers.

"The school board says that they value collaboration," Potter added. "We request that they approach this handbook in the same manner."

After teachers spoke, a citizen took the microphone and said he represented the 5.5 million taxpayers in Wisconsin who were in favor of Walker doing what he was elected to do.

Applause broke out in the auditorium as the teachers and union supporters sat silent. They walked out before the man was finished speaking.

New Berlin School Board member Art Marquardt said the board and administration had spent considerable time on the document.

He said they weren't trying to be punitive, but the environment in Wisconsin has shifted from one in which the union owned the conversation to one in which the elected representatives are now the dominant voice. - JSOnline

Schools Alter Sick Leave Policies

Many Wisconsin school districts have been making rapid changes to insurance benefits and work rules for employees no longer covered by collective bargaining agreements, but a few districts also are setting their sights on modifying sick-leave policies.

For educators, it's seen as one more benefit being sliced in the wake of Act 10, the new law signed by Gov. Scott Walker that limits collective bargaining.

For school boards and district officials, it's another benefit to be examined because of reduced state funding and limitations on raising property taxes to cover costs.

Financial savings from sick-leave changes are considerably smaller than big-ticket cost reductions often found in switching a health insurance plan design or carrier. So why is sick leave such a hot topic? - JSOnline

Protestors Disrupt School becuase of Walker

MILWAUKEE - Governor Scott Walker and others heading to Messmer Preparatory School on Milwaukee's north side had to go through alternate entrances on Friday after a protester made sure those doors wouldn't open in a normal fashion.

"Some of these folks superglued our front doors at the prep school," said Br. Bob Smith, OFM, the president of Messmer Catholic Schools, about the school on the corner of North Fratney and East Burleigh Streets.

He told Newsradio 620 WTMJ that a woman was walking in front of the school Thursday, asking people to protest.

According to Br. Smith, one protester said " 'Get ready for a riot,' because they were going to disrupt the visit." - 620WTMJ

County Exec to Cut Services, Give additional Worker Benefits

The county faces a $55 million dollar budget shortfall. County Executive Chris Abele says the budget situation is dire, and even compared it to "the Titanic meeting the Hindenburg". -620WTMJ

White Supremacy group plans Protest in West Allis

WEST ALLIS - A white supremacy group is planning a protest in response to the State Fair mob attack, and police are issuing an unusual alert.

Maureen Metzer owns a dance studio a block away from West Allis City Hall. She heard about the rally scheduled for Labor Day weekend and isn't taking any chances. "I am concerned. We actually did decide that we will not be open that day."

It's advice she and other business owners in the area got from the Police Chief in a letter recommending people "lock their doors and close during the time of this activity." Illinois Raising Tolls by almost 88%

Driving in Illinois is about to take a much bigger toll on motorists' wallets.

Tolls will shoot up an average of 88% next year to finance a $12 billion toll road expansion and renovation plan, the Illinois Toll Highway Authority decided Thursday.

For drivers who have an I-PASS, an electronic device that allows them to pay tolls automatically, it's the first toll increase in 28 years, the toll road authority said.

But for the occasional toll road user who pays in cash - including many Wisconsin drivers who don't have an I-PASS - it's going to be the second massive increase in seven years, with a third coming up three years later.

In 2005, tolls doubled for anyone without an I-PASS. Those drivers will face increases in both 2012 and 2015, while those with an I-PASS will see only a 2012 increase.

At mainline toll plazas, the ones that all drivers must pass through, the average toll will rise 35 cents, from 40 cents to 75 cents for an automobile equipped with an I-PASS on Jan. 1, the toll road authority said. Trucks pay more, depending on their size and the time of day; their rates will hold steady next year but rise in 2015.

Individual tolls vary from one plaza to another, however, and rates are above average at several of those closest to the Wisconsin border.

At the Waukegan Plaza on I-94, the I-PASS rate will jump from 75 cents to $1.40 next year. The cash rate will increase from $1.50 to $1.90 in 2012 and $2.65 in 2015. - JSOnline

13 Union Protestors Arrested and Carried out of Capitol

Madison - Several hundred chanting, cheering protesters entered the Capitol rotunda Thursday around the 6 p.m. closing time. An hour later, Capitol police carried 13 of them away.

Most of the protesters left around 6:30 p.m. at the urging of police. Officers sought to close the building and enforce a Dane County judge's order from earlier this year that the building be cleared of the public after its business was done for the day.

"I'm asking you very nicely to leave," Capitol Police Chief Charles Tubbs said. "Please leave now. We need to lock the building."

The protest came on the first day that higher pension and health contributions kick in for state employees.

The scene recalled in a modest way the massive protests of last year over Gov. Scott Walker's legislation repealing most collective bargaining for public workers. That measure also made the cuts to workers' benefits taking effect Thursday to help balance the state budget.

The first wave of protesters entered the statehouse carrying banners, shouting and banging on drums and cowbells. One of them - among those later arrested - was waving an American flag and standing on the first-floor railing overlooking the rotunda until police asked him to step down. - JSOnline

It is this type of behavior and that at the offices of Paul Ryan that have led many Independents to turn away from supporting the Union. Disruptions to the system and blatant disrespect of the law.

No Charges in Supreme Court Choking Claim

Madison - Neither Supreme Court Justice David Prosser nor fellow Justice Ann Walsh Bradley will face criminal charges for a June altercation that broke out as the judges were considering Gov. Scott Walker's union bargaining law, a special prosecutor has determined.

But the incident still could have far-reaching effects - possibly even opening the doors of the court to the public as justices debate how to decide cases.

Breaking her silence about the altercation in a written statement Thursday, Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson said she would propose "the presumption will be that court conferences are open to the public," as a way to lead the fractious court back toward civility.

Abrahamson was not available for an interview, and a court spokeswoman said she could not confirm whether the chief justice was referring to deliberations on individual cases. But meetings on the court's rules and finances are usually open to the public already, unlike the justices' deliberations.

No other appellate court in the nation opens its deliberations to public scrutiny, former state Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske said. If Wisconsin's high court did so, "that does create huge problems in decision-making," as citizens see for the first time how the justices' reasoning and even rulings can shift in the months between the time a case is argued and time a decision is handed down, warned Geske, a Marquette University law professor. - JSOnline

The group behind last year’s failed Christmas Day bombing and the recent attempt to send two explosives-laden packages to the United States wants to attack U.S. food supplies, but U.S. authorities don't believe the group has the capability to do so, Fox News has learned.

A source with knowledge of the situation said authorities obtained information “a while ago” indicating a possible plot by associates of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to target food at hotels and restaurants inside the United States, perhaps slipping harmful agents into salad bars or buffets.

“We don’t have a specific target or time frame, just the intent,” the source said.

Nevertheless, the source said, authorities are not convinced that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula – or AQAP – has the capability to actually carry out such an attack.

MILWAUKEE - County supervisors approved funding to repair O'Donnell Park after the deadly concrete collapse.

The collapse, which happened during Summerfest, took the life of 15 year old Jared Kellner. He was walking near the O'Donnell Park parking garage when a large concrete slab fell on top of him. The slab was hanging on the building as part of the decorative facade. The garage has remained closed since the incident.

In the 2011 Milwaukee County budget, supervisors opted to spend $6.5million to remove all of the other concrete panels on the structure's facade and put a coating on the building. The funding also covers other repairs to the parking garage's structure. - 620 WTMJ

Sixty-one-year-old Greg DeRosier faces trial in Oneida County on charges of third-degree sexual assault, battery and intimidating a witness. The woman told investigators DeRosier was at her house Oct. 3, became angry and beat her. She says DeRosier then ordered her to the bedroom where he sexually assaulted her. The Daily News reports the woman says DeRosier warned her that if she contacted police "there would be a price to pay."

Defense attorney Jeff Jackomino asked the woman during cross-examination in court why she didn't yell for her teenage daughter during the attack because she was in the home at the time. Jackomino also asked the woman why she waited several days before calling police. - WTMJ 4

As Jindal describes it, the letter was entirely routine, yet Obama was angry and concerned about looking bad.

The meeting between Obama and Prime Minister Manmoham Singh proceeded as planned after Indian officials relented.

It was arranged beforehand that eight reporters from the White House press pool would be admitted to the meeting at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, but Indian officials tried to cut the number from eight to five just before the photo-op.

Several U.S. officials pushed to have all eight pool members let in, but it wasn’t until Gibbs said that he was serious about pulling Obama from the event that the whole group was admitted.

"Grossman" is the Democratic consultant Andrew Grossman, and the email seems to raise the question of whether the campaign is coordinating with Planned Parenthood, an outside group.

Thousands of struggling homeowners waited in line overnight in hopes of holding on to the American dream, by making their monthly payments more affordable.

"If I get the loan re-modification today, it will give me the security, knowing that me, my husband, and my five kids will have a home," said Shari Lewis, who bought her Elk Grove, Calif., home in 2001, only to find herself drowning in debt nine years later. But on this day, her luck changed.

After meeting with lenders, Shari was able to significantly lower her mortgage payments, and keep her five-bedroom suburban home.

She credits NACA, a federally-funded nonprofit that's been holding huge marathon events to help homeowners facing foreclosure.

"People are able to come here, and in the same day, restructure their mortgages saving $500, sometimes over $1,000 a month," says NACA's charismatic leader, Bruce Marks.

Early-voting numbers out of Nevada’s two biggest counties could spell trouble for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in his tough contest against Republican Sharron Angle.

In Reno’s Washoe County and Las Vegas’s Clark County, Republican turnout was disproportionately high over the first three voting days, according to local election officials. The two counties together make up 86 percent of the state’s voter population.

The sparsely populated counties outside Clark and Washoe, which have yet to report complete early-voting results, are strongly Republican.

Some 47 percent of early voters in the bellwether Washoe County so far have been Republicans, while 40 percent have been Democrats, according to the Washoe County Registrar. Nearly 11,000 people had voted in Washoe over the first three days of early voting, which began Saturday.

Voter registration in the county is evenly split, 39 percent to 39 percent. The disproportionate turnout is a concrete indication of the Republican enthusiasm that is expected to portend a nationwide GOP wave.

A New Jersey woman suffering an asthma attack was denied an inhaler at a pharmacy

because she was $1.99 short, MyFoxNY.com reported.

Katherine O’Connor and her boyfriend were walking home from McDonald’s in Garwood, N.J., Thursday morning when she had the asthma attack, but she did not have her inhaler with her. She went to a nearby CVS, hoping to get a refill on her inhaler prescription.

But, O’Connor was denied the refill because she did not have enough money to pay for the prescription. The medicine cost just over $21, and the couple was short $1.99.

"I had exactly a $20 bill. It came to $21 and change," said O’Connor’s boyfriend, Jack Brown. "I offered him my cell phone, my wallet. I said, ‘I live right around the corner.’ I come in here all the time."

Brown begged the pharmacist to give his girlfriend the inhaler, as she was on the floor wheezing, but the pharmacist would not give in, he said.

Brown called a friend who is a paramedic, who showed up immediately and treated O’Connor.
When questioned about the incident, a store manager had “no comment.”

Karl Rove claims that contributions to his organizations Crossroads GPS and American Crossroads have surged since Democrats attacked him for failing to disclose the group's donors. When I asked Tim Kaine about that this morning on "GMA" he said Rove may be right.

“That should trouble folks. And look the polling I’ve seen suggests the American public cares deeply about this,” the DNC chairman told me. “The prospect of shadowy groups being able to put money in secretly to buy elections, to bypass the rules that the candidates have to follow in terms of disclosing their donors, should worry everybody.”

Kaine also stood by his claim that failure to disclose these donations smacks of Watergate – despite offering no evidence that any laws have been broken.

“Watergate was a scandal that involved a number of things including campaign financing that was being done with dollars bills in sacks handed over to the committee to reelect the president,” he said.

“And the Republicans have made, I believe, a concerted effort to divert as much campaign funding as they can into non-reporting entities aided by the Supreme Court decision, the Citizens United, so the American public will not know who is funding the campaign,” he added. - ABC News Story

Sen. Candidate Hits nail on head about Financial Collapse

Government action, beginning with federal legislation passed 33 years ago to help low-income people buy homes, was the cause of the economic collapse, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ron Johnson said Wednesday.

Johnson told Journal Sentinel reporters and editors, as well as its Reader Advisory Committee, that the seeds of the collapse began in 1977 with passage of the Community Reinvestment Act.

"What caused this economic downturn, collapse, was pretty much government action," Johnson said. "It wasn't helped by the big banks. I always refer to it as caused by Washington, propelled by big banks and paid for by the American public."

Decades after its passage, the federal law that helped low-income and disadvantaged people get loans to buy their own homes continues to be hotly debated. The federal law applied only to depository institutions, not private, unregulated mortgage lenders.

In Johnson's view, the law "started forcing banks to make loans to people who couldn't afford to pay them back . . . "

Asked if the banks were forced to lend to people who couldn't afford it, Johnson said: "They threatened to bring the Department of Justice in to, I guess, to prosecute banks that would be accused of redlining. Not making loans to people in certain areas."

Johnson said the law made it easy for banks to lend money.

"We'll have Fannie (Mae) and Freddie (Mac) guarantee those things so you can sell those things on the open market," Johnson said. "What does that do to a bank? First of all, if I don't make those loans, I might have Department of Justice action taken against me. But if I make the loan, I can get all of the origination fees on it, I can make a lot of money and, by the way, I don't have to incur any of the risk. The last thing you want to do when somebody is trying to make a loan is remove the risk of making the loan. You don't throw out all constraints. . . . After stumbling a bit in his first ever political debate last Friday, GOP Senate hopeful Ron Johnson put in an impressive performance tonight. It was a stunning improvement actually. He was energetic without seeming anxious, very well-prepared and deliberate in his speech — he looked like a politician ready to go to Washington. Sen. Feingold stuck to his guns and once again proved himself an experienced debater, even if most Wisconsin voters have long soured on the substance of his message. The debate had a more open format and this played to Johnson’s advantage. That is, he didn’t try to rush his answers and made his points clearly and concisely during the follow ups to the initial questions.

Perhaps the debate’s most compelling exchanges centered on freedom of expression. When Johnson asked Feingold why he did not vote to condemn MoveOn.org’s “General Betray Us” ad, Feingold cried “free speech,” arguing that the Senate has better things to do than pass meaningless resolutions. Several minutes later, Feingold — echoing a tactic that many embattled Democrats are using lately — accused Johnson of benefiting from the Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United, what Feingold called “one of the worst decisions in the history” of the court. He called on Johnson to ask third party groups spending on his behalf to stop. Johnson, referencing Feingold’s earlier defense (and drawing laughter), claimed that these groups also “have a right to free speech.” This turned into a bit of a testy back-and-forth with neither candidate backing down. Johnson missed a golden opportunity, however, to point out the almost $600,000 that MoveOn.org has recently raised on Feingold’s behalf, and to ask him if they should stop their activity as well. Count on hearing about it in the next debate.

Johnson scored big on a counter to one of Feingold’s standard lamentations — ‘woe is me, the lonely independent voice in a Congress of partisans,’ etc. — by bringing up Feingold’s (decisive) votes on the stimulus package and health-care reform, two highly partisan efforts. Feingold responded that the stimulus wasn’t partisan because the two Maine Republicans voted for it, and this seemed to cause a bit of a commotion in the crowd and considerable laughter, as Johnson fittingly threw a look of disbelief in Feingold’s direction. This was an absolute low point for Feingold and exposed his biggest weak point. He looked more than ever like a vulnerable incumbent fighting a losing battle. - NRO Story

In a speech in the White House Rose Garden this morning, President Obama pushed for bipartisan support of increased funding for transportation initiatives, and emphasized that a "fundamental overhaul" of the country's "woefully inefficient" transit system was necessary to reduce unemployment and remain competitive on an international level.

The president, speaking alongside former Secretaries of Transportation Samuel Skinner and Norman Mineta and Secretary of Treasury Timonthy Geithner, said that the six-year initiative - which has been pegged at approximately $50 billion - would not only repair and modernize U.S. roads, rails, and air systems, but also provide much-needed work opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Democrats & Liberals Attacking Businesses over Campaign Donations

f at first you don't succeed, get some friends in high places to shut your opponents up. That's the latest Washington power play, as Democrats and liberals attack the Chamber of Commerce and independent spending groups in an attempt to stop businesses from participating in politics.

Since the Supreme Court's January decision in Citizens United v. FEC, Democrats in Congress have been trying to pass legislation to repeal the First Amendment for business, though not for unions. Having failed on that score, they're now turning to legal and political threats. Funny how all of this outrage never surfaced when the likes of Peter Lewis of Progressive insurance and George Soros helped to make Democrats financially dominant in 2006 and 2008.

Chairman Max Baucus of the powerful Senate Finance Committee got the threats going last month when he asked Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman to investigate if certain tax exempt 501(c) groups had violated the law by engaging in too much political campaign activity. Lest there be any confusion about his targets, the Montana Democrat flagged articles focused on GOP-leaning groups, including Americans for Job Security and American Crossroads.

Mr. Baucus was seconded last week by the ostensibly nonpartisan campaign reform groups Democracy 21 and the Campaign Legal Center, which asked the IRS to investigate whether Crossroads is spending too much money on campaigns. Those two outfits swallowed their referee whistle in the last two campaign cycles, but they're all worked up now that Republicans might win more seats. Crossroads GPS, a 501(c)(4) affiliate of American Crossroads supported by Karl Rove, is a target because it has spent millions already in this election cycle.

Last Tuesday, the liberal blog ThinkProgress, run by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, reported that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had collected some $300,000 in annual dues from foreign companies. Since the money went into the Chamber's general fund, the allegation is that it could have been used to pay for political ads, which would violate a ban on foreign companies participating in American elections. The Chamber says it uses no foreign money for its political activities and goes to great lengths to raise separate funds for political purposes.

That didn't stop President Obama from raising the issue in a Maryland speech last week, saying that "groups that receive foreign money are spending huge sums to influence American elections." Within hours of the ThinkProgress report, the bully boys at MoveOn.org asked the Department of Justice to launch a criminal investigation of the Chamber. In a letter to the Federal Election Commission, Minnesota Senator Al Franken expressed his profound concern that "foreign corporations are indirectly spending significant sums to influence American elections through third-party groups." But for many people, there is a tension between conducting such research and protecting the sanctity of human life. The dilemma confronts not only scientists, but politicians, who are able to set government funding priorities and even place limits on the work scientists do.

Just as outgoing Gov, Jim Doyle did four years ago, Democratic nominee Tom Barrett is running a TV ad that paints his Republican opponent — Scott Walker — as extreme on the issue.

The ad features a mother talking to the camera about her son, who has juvenile diabetes. She describes how stem cell research "gives our family hope, hope for a cure," and she continues with a blunt declaration:

"Scott Walker says he would ban stem cell research in Wisconsin. That’s right, ban it."

Trying to keep his former Senate seat out of Republican hands, President Barack Obama singled out former Bush administration advisor Karl Rove Thursday night for meddling in the race through special interest-funded attack ads.

“Right here in Illinois, in this Senate race, two groups funded and advised by Karl Rove have outspent the Democratic Party two-to-one in an attempt to beat [Democratic nominee] Alexi [Giannoulias] – two-to-one. Funded and advised by Karl Rove,” Obama said at a fundraiser for Giannoulias in Chicago.

Obama also continued his cloaked assault on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – “one of the largest groups paying for these ads” – citing a recent report that showed some of the group’s money has come from foreign companies.

On a balmy evening last May, about three dozen members of the South Jersey Young Democrats convened at the Camden County Democratic Committee Headquarters in Cherry Hill.

Freeholder Jeffrey Nash warned the assembled crowd of party volunteers and legislative aides that the sour economy would make the coming election season difficult for the Democratic majority.

He told the young activists they had to get out the vote for Democrats in the fall.

Then Steve Ayscue -- a paid CCDC consultant -- took the floor with a bearded, flame-haired man few had seen before. The latter was Geoff Mackler, dispatched from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to lead freshman Rep. John Adler's re-election campaign.

Ayscue and Mackler had a plan to ensure Adler's victory. They just needed volunteers.

Internal numbers-crunching showed the difference between Adler and his Republican opponent -- then undetermined -- would hover around 5 percent. To give Adler an edge, Ayscue had recruited a then-unidentified man to run as a third-party candidate.

That candidate would act as a conservative spoiler to confuse voters and pull votes from Adler's eventual Republican challenger. But first he had to get on the ballot. Senior Pakistani diplomats and European intelligence officials have told The Guardian newspaper that President Obama's administration has deliberately exaggerated the current terror threat to European cities from militants in Pakistan for political reasons.

"I will not deny the fact that there may be internal political dynamics, including the forthcoming midterm elections," Pakistan's high commissioner to Britain, Wajid Shamsul Hasan, told CBS News in London, mirroring comments he made to The Guardian. "If the Americans have definite information about terrorists and al Qaeda people, we should be provided with that and we could go after them ourselves."

Hasan, whose job is equivalent to that of ambassador, has a reputation for making controversial, sometimes incendiary comments, but he is a veteran diplomat with close ties to the Pakistani political leadership.

More Fallout for Obama Administration on BP Spill

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration blocked efforts by government scientists to tell the public just how bad the Gulf oil spill could become and committed other missteps that raised questions about its competence and candor during the crisis, according to a commission appointed by the president to investigate the disaster.

In documents released Wednesday, the national oil spill commission's staff describes "not an incidental public relations problem" by the White House in the wake of the April 20 accident.

Among other things, the report says, the administration made erroneous early estimates of the spill's size, and President Barack Obama's senior energy adviser went on national TV and mischaracterized a government analysis by saying it showed most of the oil was "gone." The analysis actually said it could still be there.

"By initially underestimating the amount of oil flow and then, at the end of the summer, appearing to underestimate the amount of oil remaining in the Gulf, the federal government created the impression that it was either not fully competent to handle the spill or not fully candid with the American people about the scope of the problem," the report says.

Corruption in Milwaukee City Hall

Even in the best of circumstances, it's hard to beat City Hall.

But try taking on the bureaucracy in court when a city agency is doling out cash to a firm co-owned by the judge.

That's the situation faced recently by a Milwaukee nightclub.

In truth, the owners of Texture were doing quite well in their legal squabble with the city.

In August, Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Charles Kahn Jr.ruled that the Common Council had exceeded its authority by refusing to renew the liquor license for the Walker's Point nightclub. Kahn even called into question the process the city uses for issuing alcohol and liquor licenses.

"This undid years of city practice," said David Halbrooks, a former assistant city attorney who represents the nightclub.

It was an unexpected outcome for a dance club with a questionable track record.

But the victory didn't last long.

On Sept. 15 - a month after the court ruling - a city committee awarded a $50,000 grant to a firm owned by Kahn and his wife to fix up the front of a building they own. Kahn's wife had submitted the application two weeks earlier.

The veteran judge immediately disclosed the conflict.

Kahn explained that he would recuse himself from the case because he and his wife got the grant, in effect, from the defendant. The only way he'd consider staying on, he said, was if he was asked to do so by the opposing parties.

The nightclub owners, who had received the favorable ruling, agreed.

They said they trusted the judge to remain impartial.

City attorneys balked.

They did so even though it was a city agency that created the conflict by awarding the grant.

It may be a politician’s dream to determine the headlines that go on the front page of the morning newspaper.

In a new attack ad, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Tom Barrett makes it a reality, using purported replicas of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to slam rival Republican Scott Walker for "mismanagement" of Milwaukee County.

The 30-second TV spot offers a trifecta of complaints: wasted money, exploding debt and shoddy oversight of county operations. The ad aims to undercut a main Walker selling point -- his fiscal management as Milwaukee County executive.

In the ad, the narrator declares "the headlines ... tell the story."

But do they?

Instead of using shots of actual newspapers, Barrett’s ad creates a computer-generated version of the Journal Sentinel’s front page and places various headlines at the top of the page -- regardless of where the stories actually appeared. There are a host of other tricks involved: Headlines and allegations are mismatched for effect and photos of Walker are added to amplify his role and responsibility in each item.

In response, Walker has issued a statement saying he is "exploring legal action" based on the ad. The Journal Sentinel has complained to the Barrett campaign about the false and misleading headlines associated with its trademark, said Editor Martin Kaiser. - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

(CBS/AP) Admonishing his own party, President Barack Obama says it would be "inexcusable" and "irresponsible" for unenthusiastic Democratic voters to sit out the midterm elections, warning that the consequences could be a squandered agenda for years.

"People need to shake off this lethargy. People need to buck up," Mr. Obama told Rolling Stone in an interview to be published Friday. The president told Democrats that making change happen is hard and "if people now want to take their ball and go home, that tells me folks weren't serious in the first place."

The midterm elections are in five weeks and polling shows that Republicans, out of power at the White House and on Capitol Hill, have a much more excited base of supporters than Democrats. Mr. Obama, campaigning this week in four states, is in a sprint to restore the voter passion that helped him win office.

Yet in his attempt to light a fire under supporters, Mr. Obama comes across as fired up himself about how many backers fail to acknowledge the progress he sees. He said the glass-half-empty view among many progressive voters can be a debilitating force that distracts them from the real worry: Republicans.

The GOP is poised to win seats in the House, if not control of the chamber, and gain ground in the Senate, too.

"It is inexcusable for any Democrat or progressive right now to stand on the sidelines in this midterm election," Mr. Obama said.

The president has been telling Democrats to "wake up" and recognize that he and the Democratic-run Congress have delivered on promises, from a new health care law to tougher rules for Wall Street to more aid for college students. National security officials and federal law enforcement argue their ability to eavesdrop on terror suspects is increasingly "going dark," The New York Times reported, as more communication takes place via Internet services, rather than by traditional telephone.

The bill, which the White House plans to deliver to Congress next year, would require communication service providers be technically capable of intercepting and decrypting messages, raising serious privacy concerns, the Times said.

The proposal has "huge implications" and poses a test to the "fundamental elements of the Internet revolution," vice president of the Center for Democracy and Technology, James Dempsey, told the Times.

A blogger from liberal Web site The Daily Kos pierced through Boehner's security detail at yesterday's unveiling of his leadership policy "Pledge to America" to ask if he was sleeping with a lobbyist from the Printing Industries of America.

The congressman ignored the pesky blogger with a flip camera and kept moving to his fleet of black Suburbans.

The lobbyist who was named in the confrontation and then was contacted by he Daily Kos blogger Lisbeth Lyons denied the accusations. "As you can imagine, I was stunned by such a question," Lyons said. "I found it to be highly insulting, particularly as a female political professional, as well as unfounded. Beyond that, I have no further comment on the matter."

Insiders on Capitol Hill are buzzing about an upcoming New York Times exposé that will detail an alleged Boehner affair. Sources say the Times is looking for the right time to drop the story in October to sway the election, similar to how the Times reported during the 2008 presidential campaign on an alleged John McCain affair that supposedly had taken place many years before and that was flatly denied by the woman in question. - NY Post Story

The Justice Department is ignoring civil rights cases that involve white victims and wrongly abandoned a voter intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party last year, a top department official testified Friday. He called the department's conduct a "travesty on justice."

Christopher Coates, former voting chief for the department's Civil Rights Division, spoke under oath Friday morning before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, in a long-awaited appearance that had been stonewalled by the Justice Department for nearly a year.

Coates went in depth about a controversial decision to dismiss charges against New Black Panther members after they were videotaped outside a Philadelphia polling place in 2008 dressed in military-style uniforms and allegedly hurling racial slurs while one brandished a night stick.

The case has drifted in and out of the limelight over the past year as the commission has struggled to investigate it. Ex-Justice official J. Christian Adams fueled the controversy when he testified in July and accused his former employer of showing "hostility" toward cases that involve white victims and black defendants.

Senate Democrats huddled behind closed doors for one hour on Thursday trying to figure out what to do about the expiring Bush tax cuts. With no consensus emerging, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., decided to postpone a vote until after the election.

"Democrats believe we must permanently extend tax cuts for the middle-class before they expire at the end of the year, and we will.," Reid spkesman Jim Manley said in a written statement that blamed the GOP for the delay. "Democrats will not allow families in Nevada and across the country to suffer or be held hostage by Republicans who would rather give tax giveaways to millionaires and corporations that ship jobs overseas. We will come back in November and stay in session as long as it takes to get this done."

Sen Chris Dodd, D-CT, told reporters, "I think there are strong views being held. I, for one, subscribe to the notion that we ought to have a vote to extend the tax cuts for those that really need them and stop those for the ones who don't," Dodd said, but he quickly added, "There's a mixed view. Obama's Actions Mystifying?

I don't often expect to find myself supportive of President Barack Obama. But I didn't think I'd be as mystified by his actions over the past few months as I have been.

Mr. Obama and his team won a well-deserved reputation during the 2008 campaign for message discipline and a keen appreciation for how Americans would receive his words and actions.

That's why it's so surprising that, in just 20 months, Mr. Obama has lost control of his presidency's narrative. He has done things that are inexplicable, creating the impression of a White House that is clueless, rudderless and arrogant.

For example, what was to be gained by the president attacking the largely unknown House minority leader, John Boehner, last week? Set aside the unfairness of the charges and focus only on the efficacy of the president lowering himself that way.

There is far too little time before the midterm election to demonize Mr. Boehner as President Bill Clinton so effectively did to Speaker Newt Gingrich in the 1990s. That took a concerted White House effort over nearly two years that cost tens of millions of dollars for ads.

And does Mr. Obama think this will make it easier to work with Mr. Boehner after Nov. 2 if Republicans take the House and he becomes the speaker? After all, one of the public's biggest disappointments with this president is that he has failed miserably in his promise to change the political tone.

Mr. Obama's personal attacks on the GOP leader may be therapeutic for him and send a thrill up the leg of left-wingers, but it has cost him (and his party) dearly with independents and college-educated voters. In a little more than a year and a half, the president has lost a third of his support among independents, many of whom are ready to punish Democrats at the polls.

Then there's this oddity: Why did the president raise the issue of tax cuts so close to the election? Americans now trust the GOP over Democrats on taxes by 52% to 36%, according to the Aug. 23-24 Rasmussen survey. - Rove.com

WASHINGTON -- The nation's health care tab will go up -- not down -- as a result of President Barack Obama's sweeping overhaul. That's the conclusion of a government forecast released Thursday, which also finds the increase will be modest.

The average annual growth in health care spending will be just two-tenths of 1 percentage point higher through 2019 with Obama's remake, said the analysis. And that's with more than 32 million uninsured gaining coverage because of the new law.

"The impact is moderate," said economist Andrea Sisko of Medicare's Office of the Actuary, the nonpartisan unit that prepared the report.

Factoring in the law, Americans will spend an average of $13,652 per person a year on health care in 2019, according to the actuary's office. Without the law, the corresponding number would be $13,387.

The latest Rasmussen Reports statewide telephone survey of Likely Voters, including leaners, shows Fiorina picking up 48% of the vote, while Boxer draws support from 47%. Two percent (2%) prefer some other candidate, and three percent (3%) remain undecided.

These numbers show a slight shift from results with leaners found two weeks ago, when Boxer led Fiorina 49% to 44%. Leaners are those who initially indicate no preference for either of the candidates but answer a follow-up question and say they are leaning towards a particular candidate. • Ninety-two percent of Americans say the economy's in bad shape. A mere 24 percent believe it's improving. • A majority, 52 percent, now disapproves of the way Obama is handling his job overall, another first in ABC/Post polls. • Seventy-eight percent now describe themselves as dissatisfied with the way the federal government is working, up 14 points just since July to the most since October 1992. The Labor Department says companies added a net total 67,000 new jobs last month, down from July's upwardly revised total of 107,000. Wall Street analysts expected a smaller gain, according to Thomson Reuters.

Overall, the economy lost 54,000 jobs as 114,000 temporary census positions came to an end. State and local governments shed 10,000 positions. The jobless rate rose to 9.6 percent from 9.5 percent in July.

President Obama thinks that by recently signing a new bill spending $600 million to beef up border enforcement he will look tough on illegal aliens. But decisions such as today’s lawsuit by the Justice Department against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio to stop his policies regarding illegal aliens shows where the administration’s policies are really headed.

The bill Obama signed, which authorizes the hiring 1,500 new border personnel, the deployment of a pair of unmanned reconnaissance drones, and replacing some bases along the border is valuable, but it hardly undoes what the president has done up to this point. With a recent Rasmussen poll showing that 68 percent of U.S. voters support a plan to continue building a fence on the Mexican border, Obama's change strikes one as a temporary smoke screen.

Up until now the president has worked to cut the number of border agents. 384 border agents were cut last October 1st and in the 2011 fiscal year budget Obama proposed cutting another 180 agents through attrition.

But it isn't just his record of previously reducing the number of border agents. Obama has strongly opposed the use of fences, whether real ones or virtual ones. In March, he halted funding for the physical fence. Spending on "Total, CBP/Border Security Fencing, Infrastructure, and Technology" (which included the virtual fence) has fallen from $1.05 billion in 2008 at the end of the Bush administration to $800 million in 2010 to $574 million in the coming 2011 budget. That is a $479 million annual cut, something that isn't going to be made up with a pair of unmanned drones.

The Obama administration is touting an independent report released Wednesday that shows that the number of illegal immigrants crossing into the U.S. fell by nearly 65 percent in recent years.

About 300,000 immigrants illegally entered the country each year from March 2007 to March 2009, nearly two-thirds fewer than the 850,000 who annually crossed the border from 2000 to 2005, according to the report by the nonpartisan Pew Hispanic Center.

An estimated 11.1 million illegal immigrants were living in the U.S. in 2009, an 8 percent decline from the peak of 12 million in 2007. That represented the first significant decrease in two decades, the report said.

“We’ve seen a reversal in what had been a long-term growth in the unauthorized immigrant population,” Pew demographer Jeffrey Passel, who co-authored the report, told reporters.

20 More States Poised to Sign Arizona Style Immigration Laws?

In states far from the Mexico border — from liberal Massachusetts to moderate Iowa — Democrats and Republicans in gubernatorial races are running on strict anti-illegal-immigration platforms, pledging to sign an array of tough enforcement measures into law come January.

Of the 37 gubernatorial races this year, candidates in more than 20 states have endorsed adopting a strict Arizona-style immigration law or passing legislation that makes it harder for illegal immigrants to live, work and access basic public benefits in their states, according to a POLITICO analysis.

The prevalence of the issue means the Obama administration could find itself battling Arizona-style flare-ups in statehouses across the country, raising pressure on the White House and Congress to break the deadlock in Washington over comprehensive immigration reform.

Health Care Fine Print Coming to Light - Small Businesses Buried in Paperwork

Congressional Democrats found a lot of ways to pay for the country’s health insurance overhaul, some more popular than others. But one in particular has small lawn services, work-at-home parents and the nation’s smallest businesses mighty concerned. In a move to increase government revenues for health care while cutting tax abuses, Congress included a provision in the bill, approved in March, requiring businesses to file Internal Revenue Service reports on expenditures above $600 to any single vendor.

Here is how John Boehner, the House Republican leader and a leading critic of the provision (and the health insurance bill), derided it when he spoke at the City Club of Cleveland on Aug. 24: "If a landscaper wants to buy a new lawnmower, or a restaurant needs a new ice-maker, they have to report that to the feds. If you're a mom-and-pop grocery store, and you buy $1,000 worth of merchandise from 15 different vendors, that's 15 different forms you have to file."

We have to assume that Boehner, who’s from southwestern Ohio, meant the mom-and-pop store is spending $1,000 on each of the vendors, rather than spreading a $1,000 purchase among 15 vendors (because that would only be $66.66 each). If that is the case, Boehner’s statement is true, or will be as of Jan. 1, 2012. But Boehner is not the only one calling it nuts. So is the National Federation of Independent Businesses, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and even a Cleveland congressman who is generally Boehner’s ideological opposite.

"This obviously was something that needed to be better thought out," said that congressman, Democrat Dennis Kucinich, in a telephone interview. "It has to be fixed, and it will be fixed, because it’s not tolerable." - Politifact

Control of the U.S. Senate increasingly appears to hang on the fate of an unlikely trio of Democratic incumbents who were elected along with Bill Clinton in 1992, hail from liberal-leaning states and have lived mostly charmed political lives.

At the start of the year, few observers thought the Senate was up for grabs in part because it seemed implausible that Washington’s Patty Murray, California’s Barbara Boxer and Wisconsin’s Russ Feingold were in any serious danger.

All three had won their last elections comfortably. And they were stockpiling the sort of money that flows readily to three-term senators.

But with the political environment turning toxic for Democrats and incumbents, Murray drawing perhaps her toughest possible opponent and Boxer and Feingold facing self-funders, the three Class of 1992 veterans are in the fight of their long political lives as the battle for control of the Senate moves from traditional battlegrounds to blue state venues.

The Senate majority could rest in their hands since it’s difficult to conjure a scenario where Republicans could pick up the 10 seats they need to reclaim the Senate without knocking off at least two of the three.

None of them will be easy to defeat—each is keenly attuned to the threat and has begun hammering the opposition. Senior Democrats, however, are increasingly worried about the trio and especially Murray and Feingold.

While Feingold has carved out an independent niche for himself in a state with a rich reform tradition, Wisconsin is hardly a left-wing bastion. President George W. Bush narrowly lost there twice and until recently Republicans controlled the state Assembly. And two years after he won the state by 14 percent, President Obama’s numbers there are sagging. So the turf is tougher for Feingold than it is for Boxer and Murray.

Feingold has an additional problem: he’s facing business executive Ron Johnson, an opponent who can fund his own campaign and has been up on TV continuously since Jun. - Politico Story

President Obama's Oval Office address Tuesday evening was timed to mark the end of the U.S. combat mission in Iraq, though it also came two months before midterm congressional elections that could hinge on the state of the domestic economy -- and Obama didn't shy from drawing links and contrasts between the two.

Obama portrayed the end of the U.S. combat role in the Iraq as an opportunity to shift more focus to rebuilding the economy, which some economists say is increasingly in danger of falling back into a recession.

"We have spent a trillion dollars at war, often financed by borrowing from overseas. This, in turn, has short-changed investments in our own people, and contributed to record deficits," he said, adding that too many middle-class families are working harder for less.

The troops in Iraq "have met every test that they faced," Obama said. "Now, it is our turn. Now, it is our responsibility to honor them by coming together, all of us, and working to secure the dream that so many generations have fought for -- the dream that a better life awaits anyone who is willing to work for it and reach for it".

But Republicans refused to allow Obama to move on without noting the credit they say was due to President Bush for the troop surge in 2007 that ultimately saved a losing war effort. John McCain, the Republican senator who ran against Obama in the 2008 presidential election, called it "a real lack of generosity of spirit."

Obama's Stimulus Package Cost more than All 8 Years of Iraq War

As President Obama prepares to tie a bow on U.S. combat operations in Iraq, Congressional Budget Office

numbers show that the total cost of the eight-year war was less than the stimulus bill passed by the Democratic-led Congress in 2009.

According to CBO numbers in its Budget and Economic Outlook published this month, the cost of Operation Iraqi Freedom was $709 billion for military and related activities, including training of Iraqi forces and diplomatic operations.

The projected cost of the stimulus, which passed in February 2009, and is expected to have a shelf life of two years, was $862 billion.

The U.S. deficit for fiscal year 2010 is expected to be $1.3 trillion, according to CBO. That compares to a 2007 deficit of $160.7 billion and a 2008 deficit of $458.6 billion, according to data provided by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.

A new poll shows that public support for health care reform dropped sharply in August – a dagger in Democrats’ hopes that their landmark legislation will help them in November’s midterm.

The Kaiser Health Tracking Poll has support for the bill dropping seven percentage points in August – down to 43 percent – while opposition rose 10 points to 45 percent. That’s the weakest showing since May – and a far cry from the bump proponents had hoped to see as some of the law’s more consumer-friendly provisions kick in.

Democrats said throughout the year-long debate on Capitol Hill that support for the overhaul would increase once the bill passed and Americans were able to take advantage of some of its benefits. “Public opinion on health reform has been stuck in a fairly narrow band and is not changing dramatically,” said Drew Altman, president and CEO of the Kaiser Family Foundation. “And with concerns about the economy and jobs dominating the public’s agenda and local issues always so important in midterm elections, it is not clear that health reform will play a significant role at the polls in November.” - Politico Story
